Terms
The short version. The Service is a free tool, offered as it is. Meanings come from third-party sources and can be wrong, so don’t rely on them for important decisions. We are not responsible for losses that come from using it.
1. Agreement
These Terms of Use (“Terms”) are an agreement between you and Ojas Rajankar (“we”, “us”), the maker of the “What Does That Mean?” Chrome extension (the “Extension”) and its website (the “Website”, together the “Service”). By installing or using the Service you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.
2. What the Service is
The Service shows dictionary meanings for words you select, using content provided by third parties (see Credits). It is free. We may change, suspend or stop any part of it at any time, for any reason, without notice and without liability.
3. Information only, no advice
Definitions, pronunciations, examples and spoken audio are provided for general information only. They come from Wiktionary, a community-edited project, through the Free Dictionary API, and may be incomplete, out of date, inaccurate, regional, or offensive. We do not write, review or endorse that content. Nothing in the Service is legal, medical, financial, academic, translation or other professional advice. You are solely responsible for how you use any information from the Service.
4. Third-party services and content
The Service depends on services we do not own or control, including the Free Dictionary API, Wiktionary, Google Chrome, text-to-speech voices from Chrome or your operating system, the Chrome Web Store, and our website host. Their availability, accuracy and practices are their responsibility, and their own terms apply to your use of them. We are not liable for any act, omission, outage or content of a third party.
Dictionary content is licensed by its authors under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 License. If you copy or reuse it, you are responsible for meeting that license’s terms.
5. Acceptable use
You agree not to use the Service to break any law or anyone’s rights; to send automated or excessive requests to the dictionary service or otherwise disrupt it; to interfere with the Service’s security; or to copy, modify or redistribute the Service in a way that breaches these Terms or any license listed in Credits.
6. Ownership and trademarks
The Service’s original code, design, name, logo and artwork are owned by us and protected by law. Third-party components remain the property of their owners and are used under the licenses listed in Credits; nothing in these Terms limits your rights under those licenses.
Chrome and Chrome Web Store are trademarks of Google LLC. Wiktionary is a trademark of the Wikimedia Foundation. Product Hunt and its logo are trademarks of Product Hunt, Inc., shown here only to link to our public listing. Other names belong to their respective owners. Their use here is only to describe compatibility and sources. The Service is independent and is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by Google, the Wikimedia Foundation, the Free Dictionary API or any other third party named on this page.
7. No warranties
To the fullest extent permitted by law, the Service and all content are provided “as is” and “as available”, with all faults and without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including any warranties of accuracy, reliability, availability, merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, secure or free of harmful components, or that any definition is correct.
8. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, profits, revenue, goodwill or opportunity, arising out of or relating to the Service or these Terms, however caused and under any theory of liability, even if we were told such damages were possible. Our total liability for all claims relating to the Service will not exceed the amount you paid us to use it in the twelve months before the claim, which, because the Service is free, is zero.
Some places do not allow certain warranty exclusions or liability limits. Where that is the case, those exclusions and limits apply only to the extent the law allows, and nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
9. Indemnity
To the extent permitted by law, you agree to defend, indemnify and hold us harmless from any claims, damages, losses and costs (including reasonable legal fees) arising from your misuse of the Service or your breach of these Terms or of any third party’s rights.
10. Ending your use
You can stop using the Service at any time by uninstalling the Extension. We may stop offering the Service, or refuse it to anyone who breaches these Terms. Sections 3 to 9 and 11 to 13 continue to apply after use ends.
11. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms. The date at the top shows the latest version. Continuing to use the Service after a change means you accept the updated Terms.
12. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of India, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of India, except where the law of your country of residence gives you a mandatory right to bring proceedings there.
13. General
If any part of these Terms is found unenforceable, the rest stays in effect. Our not enforcing a right is not a waiver of it. These Terms and the Privacy Policy are the entire agreement between you and us about the Service. You may not transfer your rights under these Terms; we may transfer ours.
